2009 Countdown: #73 Anthony Lalota

Name: Anthony Lalota
Height: 6'4"
Weight: 256 lbs.
High School: The Hun School in Princeton, NJ
Position: Defensive end
Class: Freshman
Jersey Number: #90
Prediction for 2009: Redshirt

Lalota enrolled early and took reps at the Quick position in the spring, but it seems he'll play in a three-point stance as a more traditional defensive end. He was 230 lbs. on the spring roster and apparently has put on 26 lbs. over the last seven months, so that's a start . . . but if he has indeed gained that much weight, it's probably not all muscle. Still, he's extremely raw and those reps at Quick probably took away from getting reps at DE. We might not see Lalota get many reps until 2011, which is when Adam Patterson and Greg Banks will both be gone.

  1. How much should a DE weigh in this defense? I know traditionally they range from 250 to 275 (woodley and Graham both started at 250 and moved up (moving up) to 265 for their Senior year). LaLota (the second L is capitalized I think) being at 256 would be okay for this team right?

  2. Also with MI going to a 3-4 is the line going to be made up of Graham, Campbell, and Martin or will Graham stand up and be an OLB?

  3. Patterson and Banks have both been around for a while, and they weigh 263-266. I'm guessing they're where they need to be, so defensive ends should probably be 260-275.

Graham was around 285 as a freshman and played some defensive tackle that first year.

The defensive line this year will be Graham, Martin, and Van Bergen (all of whom will be in a three-point stance) with someone (probably Herron) playing the hybrid OLB/DE in a two-point.

  4. Is Campbell not ready to start? I thought he was a beast at the NT position and would start from day 1.

  5. Nah, he's probably third on the depth chart at NT behind Martin and Renaldo Sagesse. He has a lot of work to do on technique.
